Responsibilities:
The Head of Outdoor Education provides strategic leadership and oversight of all student trips, residential experiences, and outdoor learning at British School Jakarta. Grounded in the school’s Mandala philosophy, the role ensures that all programmes align with the principles of Challenge, Service, and Culture (CSC), fostering learning, personal growth, wellbeing, and global citizenship. This includes risk management, staff training, and the integration of experiential learning into the curriculum, ensuring that all experiences are safe, meaningful, and transformative for students.
Requirements:
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Outdoor Education, or a related field
- Extensive experience with a minimum of 5 years experience in education; including leadership in outdoor education, adventure learning, or student expeditions
- Experience in leading, organising, and managing off-campus trips
- A nurturing and empathetic approach, fostering trust and confidence among students, parents and staff when planning and leading outdoor experiences
- Committed to building strong, positive relationships with families, understanding the responsibility they entrust to the school when their children embark on residential trips
- Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in outdoor education, risk management, and experiential learning
- Experience in safety and risk assessment procedures for outdoor education and school trips
- Highly effective leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to engage students, staff, parents, and external partners
- Strong administrative and organisational skills, including budgeting, policy development, and logistics coordination
- Committed to the highest standards of excellence, including ethical standards with a strong commitment to legal ethics exhibited in knowledge and practice, and professional responsibility
- Highly self-motivated and able to work to strict deadlines
- Certified Quality Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
- Certifications in wilderness first aid, risk assessment, climbing, kayaking, or other high-risk outdoor activities
- An understanding of International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum and its integration with outdoor learning
- Advanced written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills in order to effectively liaise with internal and external parties, including ability to make formal presentations with confidence and impact using appropriate presentation techniques and aids
- Proficiency in trip management software (e.g., EVOLVE)

The site comprises two sections: Primary (including Kindergarten) and Secondary (Junior, for twelve to fourteen-year-olds; and Senior, for fifteen to eighteen-year-olds). The Primary and Secondary sections each house a Sports Hall and Libraries. Other facilities include a well-equipped Music Department; a state-of-the-art BSJ World Theatre; a Language Acquisition Centre; an olympic-size Swimming Pool with touch-pad time recording equipment; ample playing fields and Tennis Courts. All classrooms are air-conditioned and equipped with air purifiers, LCD projectors, interactive whiteboards, and computers.
