Responsibilities:

  • Proactively creates and develops positive relationships with all members of the school community (students, teachers, families)
  • Establishes positive working relationships with colleges and universities, ensuring they are familiar with SVP and its programmes, and creating opportunities for successful admission of SVP students
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of colleges and universities, which includes making regular contact
  • Stays current on high education changes and the entrance requirements for both national and international universities
  • Develops curriculum to support the career planning and university selection/application processes
  • Works with students and their families to understand the career alternatives available to them as well as the educational alternatives that are accessible
  • Guides each student in Grade 10 to choose courses consistent with his/her interests, abilities and career plans
  • Meets with students individually and in groupings to educate and empower them on how to navigate the university process, admissions trends, and individual university options
  • Counsels and assist students to identify resources for scholarships and financial aid for universities
  • Provides student and parent updates throughout the year on university application and scholarship information and deadlines
  • Creates and submits materials to universities in support of applicants, including transcripts and references/recommendations. May include coordinating the faculty writing of requested recommendation for students applying to universities
  • Maintains a resource library of print & electronic information of university catalogues, university guides, scholarship information, and financial aid applications
  • Develops and maintains the university counseling internal website and ensures that students and parents are familiar navigating the site
  • Assists students with the completion of university admissions applications
  • Educates students on appropriate interviewing techniques, self-assessment tools, and application essay writing techniques
  • Organizes and promotes assessment opportunities and interpreting test results to students and/or parents on request
  • Directs communication via newsletters (monthly), information packets, phone and e-mail with students and families
  • Assures that appropriate, accurate information is maintained in each student’s permanent, cumulative record
  • Maintains accurate files on all students and their progression through high school and into the university application process
  • Collaborates with student’s homeroom advisors to deliver information, gather recommendations and meet deadlines
  • Coordinates university visits to the school
  • Participates in local university fairs
  • Coordinates university entrance exam testing and interpretation
  • Pursues professional development opportunities. Including attending conferences and professional meetings to remain current with industry trends
  • Collaborates with admissions and marketing departments to convey information (within ethical and privacy limits) for the interest of prospective parents. (SAT scores, university admissions, scholarship levels)
  • Maintains an up to date and inviting University display area
