Overview
Responsibilities:
- Lesson Planning: Design curricula that align with educational standards, tailoring lessons to different skill levels in the classroom
- Teaching: Explain concepts, demonstrate problem-solving, and encourage critical thinking through examples and exercises
- Assessment: Create and grade tests, quizzes, and homework to track student progress and identify areas needing improvement
- Support: Offer extra help to struggling students, whether through office hours, tutoring, or simplified explanations
- Classroom Management: Maintain a productive learning environment, keeping students engaged and on task
- Professional Development: Stay updated on teaching methods and new math-related topics to keep lessons relevant
- Communication: Work with parents, administrators, and other teachers to support student growth
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, education, or a related field is usually the minimum. Many regions also require a teaching credential or certification, which involves additional coursework and student teaching experience
- Skills: Strong grasp of mathematical concepts (algebra, geometry, calculus, etc.), problem-solving ability, and communication skills to explain complex ideas clearly
- Certification: In many places, like the US, you’d need to pass a state-specific teaching exam (e.g., Praxis) and obtain a teaching license. Requirements vary by country or state
- Experience: While not always mandatory, prior experience tutoring, mentoring, or working with students can be a big plus
- Soft Skills: Patience, adaptability, and the ability to engage students who might find math intimidating or boring
